Research data management

Writing a DMP

The data management plan (DMP) is a written document that describes how research data will be managed before, during and after the project. This document is a research roadmap, an instrument that guarantees proper data management. It saves time and anticipates certain issues (e.g. costs, destruction or loss of data, infrastructure, etc.).

As the DMP is a living document, it is advisable to update it regularly throughout the project. The DMP is a tool that ensures the implementation of the FAIR principles

What does the DMP contain?

The description of research data in accordance with the FAIR principles is an integral part of a DMP. In particular, the DMP must contain information on the following points:

  • Data collection
  • Documentation and metadata
  • Ethics and legal compliance
  • Storage and backup strategies
  • Selection and conservation
  • Data sharing and re-use

When should a DMP be completed?

An increasing number of funders require a DMP to be completed when submitting an application, including the SNSF, HORIZON Europe, AXA Research Fund, U.S. Federal Grants, Ligue genevoise, Ligue vaudoise contre le cancer, etc.

SNSF : The DMP is now required only for approved projects. The SNSF also invites researchers to update their DMP. A final version will be requested at the end of the grant.
